Local SEO Checklist: Rank Your Business on Google Maps

When someone searches "web designer near me" or "dentist in Sector 17", Google shows three businesses on a map before any website. Getting into those three spots is the fastest way for a local business to win new customers.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local ranking factor. Fill in every field:

  • Exact business name — no keyword stuffing
  • Primary and secondary categories that match what you sell
  • Service areas, opening hours and holiday hours
  • Products and services with descriptions and prices
  • At least 10 real photos of your office, team and work

2. Make your NAP consistent everywhere

NAP means Name, Address and Phone number. Google cross-checks it across your website, social profiles and directories. Even small differences ("Sec 17" vs "Sector 17") create doubt. Pick one format and use it everywhere.

3. Build local citations

Citations are listings of your business on directories such as Justdial, IndiaMART, Sulekha, Bing Places and industry-specific sites. Start with 20–30 quality listings and keep them consistent.

4. Create location pages on your website

If you serve several cities, create one helpful page per city that explains your service there, with local proof such as projects, testimonials and directions. Avoid copy-pasting the same text with only the city name changed — Google treats that as thin content.

5. Earn reviews — and reply to every one

How to ask for reviews

Send a short WhatsApp message with your direct review link right after a happy customer moment. Most people are glad to help if it takes 30 seconds.

How to respond

Thank positive reviewers by name. For negative reviews, respond calmly, take the conversation offline and show future readers you care.

6. Post weekly on your profile

GBP posts — offers, updates, new projects — signal an active business and give searchers a reason to choose you. Two posts a week is a good rhythm.

7. Track calls, directions and website clicks

Your GBP performance report shows how people find and contact you. Tag your website link with UTM parameters so you can see GBP visitors separately in Google Analytics.

Quick win: Most businesses we audit have incomplete categories and fewer than five photos. Fixing just those two things often moves the needle within weeks.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take?

Profile optimisation can show results in 4–8 weeks. Competitive categories and multiple locations typically take 3–6 months of consistent work.

Can I rank in a city where I don't have an office?

The map pack strongly favours proximity, so it is difficult. You can still rank organically for that city with a helpful location page and local proof.
